Ailbhe's Christening
One family experience of baptism at St. Peter's

Ailbhe O'Sullivan is daughter of Cormac and Kay O'Sullivan..
Here Cormac speaks about her baptism.

Our Ailbhe was born on 2nd April, 1998 and our plans were to have a summer christening.  The necessary arrangements were made with the sacristy and the date 26th July was agreed.  Then we were told about the Baptism Team and the celebration of christening at St. Peter's.  We were invited to a meeting a week in advance of the big date and to be honest we were not entirely sure what we were walking into, as the christening of our first child Senan was a case of turn up on the day and away you go.

"We revisited the sacrament of Baptism in a new light"

Preparation Meeting
The meeting turned out to be a most informative and highly interesting session.  It served as a preparation for the big day where we discussed with the team the sacrament of baptism, its purpose and the requirements and roles of both parents and godparents.  We also did a practice run with the team talking us through what would happen on the day from the front door of the church to the baptismal font.  This helped to put the whole day into context for us.

The Big Day
The big day arrived and in all our finery we made the short journey to St. Peter's.  We met Fr. O'Farrell and the Baptism Team and last minute preparations were made.  As part of their participation and involvement in the ceremony each family was given a part to play.  This ensured that each group was actively involved in proceedings.  Even the younger children were included and we will always remember our three year old carrying a banner, upside down, which should have read, 'Sin is taken away'.

The whole day was most enjoyable.  But what made it extra special was the way in which the Baptism Team through their efforts personalised the day for us.  Their enthusiasm, commitment and encouragement made this a very special day for us.  Something that we had entered into with some reservation turned out to be a very rewarding experience as we revisited the sacrament of baptism in a new light.

Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us,
by letting us be called God's children;
and that is what we are.
My dear people, we are already the children of God
but what we are to be in the future
has not yet been revealed;
all we know is, that when it is revealed
we shall be like him
because we shall see him as he really is.
1 John 3: 1-2
