From Weakness to Power

Surveys today often show that many people operate at only a fraction of their potential; various forms of releasing energy are advertised.

The friends of Jesus were very scared after the hard times of his passion and death; even after the resurrection they were hesitant.  But with the momentous coming of the Holy Spirit these first Christians were marvellously encouraged and launched into striking manifestations of God’s grace (R1).

Jesus in the gospel bestows the Holy Spirit upon the disciples by the symbolic act of breathing (‘Spiritus’), in order to send them out to evangelise and forgive sins.

St. Louise de Marillac had a mystical experience of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (1623).  She had been going through a time of trial and darkness. Then, on this feast she got  ‘an inner assurance’ about God, so that ‘I should not doubt’.  Soon after, she took as Director St. Vincent de Paul, both of whom went on to do splendid works of holiness and charity.

We too are drawn to listen to God’s Spirit, being careful not to seek personal acclaim, but to glorify God with our gifts received (R2).  Let us be attentive, and obedient to the Holy Spirit, who is always being poured out upon us.
