On the third day Easter coming early this year seems to have surprised, even shocked, many of us. Someone said the other day she feels “caught out” this year. So too were all those caught up in, caught out by the first Easter. All that talk that Jesus talked about “the third day” had gone over their heads and bypassed their hearts - you see, the third day is for the long finger, never tomorrow… always out there somewhere. The three runners to the tomb are caught out, tripped up by their own troubles and tribulations; and faith comes dropping slow. Mary of Magdala needs a body, dead if possible, to grieve over, to anoint once more with costly ointment; a “risen” Christ hardly resonates with Peter now who recently rejected him. One alone, “the one Jesus loved”, runs headlong in , impelled by love, unrestrained by regret; and seeing, or rather not seeing, believes. May the love of Christ catch us out this Easter overcoming doubt, overwhelming old regrets, and may faith come dropping slow in the darkness dawning of each of our own third days. Fr. Eamon Devlin, C.M. Easter Sunday 23rd March, 2008
