NEVER, NEVER, NEVER A certain politician in Northern Ireland once came out with that "never, never, never" response. How glad and how mystified we were to see that strident negative intolerance resolve itself into what we now call accommodation and compromise. So, "never" became "perhaps", "possibly" or "lets see." Looking back in more tranquil days that "never" word finds an echo with most of us. I'm "never" speaking to him or her again or I could "never" forgive her or him for what they said or did to me. Never say "never", they say. The word "never" disappears from the heavenly vocabulary. In fact heaven is full of the "ever" word - everlasting life or for ever and ever. If I am going to be with a certain neighbor or colleague or someone from my past, for ever and ever then maybe I might need to look at some compromise or accommodation as Jesus challenges me today to love my neighbor as myself.
